The basic principle of weaving is the same today as it was in prehistoric times. Woven goods, whether baskets of the ancients or textiles of the modern power loom, are made by interlacing lengthwise materials with crosswise materials.

“Warps and Wefts” is about what can be created with this simple weaving structure. This is not just a weaving exhibit. Artists are encouraged to adapt their media to meet the criteria of ‘warp and weft.’

Information and entry forms are available online for download and at the Gualala Arts Center. Entries must be received by May 1, 2012.

Raw Fiber Clearance Sale

October 2011

I’d like to introduce our farm. We are Islandcrest Alpacas from Camano Island, WA, where we raise a small group of 30 huacaya alpacas. We have an abundance of fleece stored from the past 2-3 years of shearing the animals, and we need to make room.

These fleeces are bagged by animal, separated into blankets and #2’s. Each bag has only one year’s fleece from one animal. The bags are on average 2.5 to 3 lbs, some are over and some are a little less. We are asking $25/bag, which is a very good deal, as some farms are asking $2 to $4 per ounce. We just need to “clean house” as we are running out of room to store them. Selling them for a set bulk price works for us and we have found many spinners who think it is an affordable way to get some great fleece.

Many, many fine fleeces; award winning whites and browns, as well as superfine fawns. We do have a couple blacks, but the silver greys are gone, usually the first to go. Most have staple lengths of over 3 inches, some as long as 5.

I will ship to you if requested, purchaser must pay for the postage/ups. If you would like to come to the farm and take a look at the fleeces, and the animals they are from, we are more than happy to have visitors.

Please contact us at islandcrestalpacas@frontier.com or by phone 425-239-3690. I would be happy to answer any questions, as well as send sample photos. Thank you.

“drawing upon the richness of sights, sounds and beauty of the people and the landscape of Oaxaca, Mexico, Woven Lives provides a fascinating look at contemporary Zapotec weavers from six different villages. This colorful documentary celebrates their extraordinary textiles and illustrates how the art of weaving cloth has helped the Zapotecs retain their cultural identity for thousands of years. The story traces the integration of ancient techniques with new technologies and explores how the artisans are now looking to the past to help them move forward into the future.”

RETURN TO SENDER
A spinning challenge! ”Return to Sender” is an event where spinners create unique and wonderful yarn with fiber especially hand dyed just for the 2012 Conference. The finished yarn is returned to CNCH to be judged (optional) and displayed at the conference. This year we have chosen an oatmeal-colored Blue Faced Leicester and tussah silk blend (85/15) that Mary Finley and Roger Salter of Dreamy Goat Design Studio first dyed with natural dyes, then carded into soft striped batts. If you would like to participate, you will receive 2 ounces of fiber and complete guidelines by sending a $9.00 check (payable to CNCH 2012) by March 15, 2012 to Wendy Lacy. Email Wendy at R2SCNCH (at) gmail.com for further directions. Batts will be ready for purchase and spinning in September.

Fashion Show Info for CNCH 2012

Plans for the “ Tradition/Innovation” Fashion Show at CNCH 2012 are coming together! The theme encourages creativity – How can you innovate on a traditional technique? What traditional technique do you want to showcase in a contemporary garment? How do tradition and innovation work together in one piece? The ideas are endless! Experiment with new fibers, new (to you) structures, or just weave what you weave best – the possibilities are endless.

Fashion Show entries will be judged by Jane Foster and Daryl Lancaster. Jane is a haute couture seamstress and teacher from Walnut Creek, California. Daryl is a well-known weaver and master seamstress from New Jersey. She will also be teaching at CNCH 2012.

Each individual is allowed three entries, and an ensemble counts as just one entry. Entries will be modeled at the Fashion Show on Friday evening, May 18 during the conference, and then will be hung in the Fashion Show Gallery for the duration of the conference. Registration forms and entry details will be in the registration booklet and online at the CNCH.org site in late September.
